Clover Creekâs Furniture Row was a single block on the South side of Clover Creek, literally on the other side of the tracks. From what I could gather, the North side of Clover Creek contained the middle class, upper crust, the parks, running trails and Town Square. Whereas, the South side of the tracks contained the much less affluent crowd, the warehouses, the abandoned buildings and the industrial part of town.
Furniture Row was here because of all the warehouse buildings. Each store was jam-packed with furniture, paintings, rugs and other accessories and decorations from wall to wall.
I spotted Melindaâs Interior Design Space as soon as I exited the highway, just like Grandpa Lockwoodâs handyman mentioned. Even if it were not there, it wouldâve been hard to miss. There was a big, purple, diamond heart rotating above the building. I spotted it from the highway. It was lit up and had the word Melindaâs blinking in white. In San Diego, this couldâve been the calling light for a strip club. It was a little tacky but it did a great job standing out on the furniture strip.
I parked the car, put Lucky back in his carrier and headed into her store. I couldn't decide whether he liked the carrier better or being in the kitty Bjorn in my jacket. He seemed a little squirmy at the ice cream shop but maybe that was only because I wouldnât share my double salted caramel coffee ice cream sandwich with him. The soft purring changed to screeching when I exited the car. Apparently, Lucky was like me and did not enjoy cold weather.
âDonât worry, little guy. Iâll use the kitty Bjorn next time so you can hide in the jacket,â I said, holding up the carrier.
Lucky roared even louder in response. I had no idea what that meant, but the wind chose that moment to pick up, so I rushed inside Melindaâs Design Store.
The inside of Melindaâs showroom was just as gaudy and over the top as the bright blinking diamond advertising it. This explained a lot about the interior design work done on Frosted. Why Melinda decided to set up shop in Clover Creek instead of somewhere like San Diego where her skills would have been better appreciated was beyond me.
âWell, howdy there. Can I help you out today, sugar?â asked a petite, bleached blond woman. She was wearing a gold-sequined top and black jeans and looked like she stepped right out of a John Wayne western. She completed the look with white suede and fur-covered thigh high boots and really big hair. She screamed Texas, even without the Southern drawl.
âIâm looking for Melinda. I believe she decorated Frosted, the cupcake bakery over in Town Square,â I said, pointing out the door. I had no idea if I were pointing to the North, the East or the West. I was terrible with directions.
âYouâre looking right at her. Did you want something similar for your home? I get requests like that all the time.
